What to See & Do

Shopping in Harare is highly recommended. This city has an array of shops catering for every budget, including malls with fast-food, clothing, shoes and accessories. The traditional open market at Mbare with its colourful array of baskets, stone and wooden sculptures, jewelry, food and clothing is popular with both locals and tourists alike.

Another must see is the Lion and Cheetah Park, which is just a short drive from Harare city centre. Lions and other wild animals including cheetah, giraffe, ostrich, zebra, wildebeest, antelope and Zimbabwe's largest and oldest galapagos tortoise can be seen and photographed in their natural surroundings.

Just outside of Harare to the east, you will come across the Chivero Mukuvisi Woodlands. This natural woodland of 227 hectares is home to a wide range of animals including giraffe, zebra, impala, tsessebe, wildebeest, bushbuck, steenbuck, reedbuck and eland, and over 230 bird species including the shy narina trogon, African finfoot and Ayres hawk eagle.

Visit the National Gallery which houses a collection of interesting and valuable pieces of art and sculpture, including superb Shona soft-stone carvings. The National Archives has a rare collection of historic diaries, note-books and reports written by famous missionaries and explorers. Some of the original works of some of the greatest names in African exploration can be viewed here.
